After Childbirth: Urination and Bowel Problems

Overview

It may be difficult to urinate for a day or two after delivery. And you may urinate more than usual for days or weeks after delivery. Your body is getting rid of the extra fluid from pregnancy. You may also sweat heavily as you lose the extra fluid.

If you had an incision (episiotomy) or a tear in your vagina during childbirth, your bowel movements may be painful. You also may have constipation. Drink plenty of water and juices and take stool softeners to help soften stools and ease pain.
