Health Connect Registry

Last updated

If you live in British Columbia and need a family doctor or nurse practitioner, register for the Health Connect Registry. A strong, long-term primary care provider and patient relationship is an important step in you and your family’s healthful living.

Register to get a family doctor or nurse practitioner

When you register, you are added to a list of people in need of a family doctor or nurse practitioner in your community. The list is securely shared with attachment coordinators who are working in communities throughout B.C. to match people with primary care providers who can take on new patients.

Registration takes less than five minutes. To register, provide your:

  • Personal Health Number (PHN), found on your BC Services Card or BC Driver's Licence
  • Home address
  • Email address and phone number

To help us find you a match, you will have the option to inform us of any new and recent changes to your health when you register. Find out more about the health questions.

How to register in other languages

Call 8-1-1 to register for the Health Connect Registry in languages other than English.

Translation services are available in over 130 languages.

After dialing 8-1-1, you will be connected with an English-speaking health service navigator. For service in another language, simply state the language (for example, say “Punjabi”), and an interpreter who speaks that language will join the call.

Who should register

If you live in B.C. and need a family doctor or nurse practitioner, you can register. You can register yourself and your family members. You can also register on behalf of a person in your care, for example, you may be a health care provider or social worker.

If you already have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, you don’t need to register.

If you’re on a clinic or community waitlist

Waitlists at clinics in B.C. have transitioned to the Health Connect Registry. If you previously registered for a waitlist at a local clinic, you can choose to register for the Health Connect Registry again, or you can wait to be contacted directly about your registration. You will maintain your original waitlist registration date from when you registered on the local clinic waitlist.

After you register

When a family doctor or nurse practitioner in your area becomes available, the team in your community will contact you. They may also contact you by phone or email for more information or to offer health care support while you wait to be matched.

Primary care services are available in communities throughout B.C. while you wait. You can search for services in your community using the HealthLink BC Services Directory

Other available services include:

  • Calling HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 to speak to a health service navigator who can answer your questions, help you find services in your community, and connect you to health care providers including nurses, dietitians, exercise professionals, and pharmacists. 8-1-1 is available anytime of the day or night and offers translation services available in over 130 languages (call 7-1-1 for the deaf or hard of hearing).
  • Community pharmacies can assist with routine and emergency prescription renewals and prescribe prescriptions for contraceptives (birth control) and 21 minor ailments (e.g., headaches, pink eye, uncomplicated UTIs etc.).
  • Immunizations for adults and children are provided at community pharmacies, public health units, community health centres, and primary care clinics throughout the province.
  • Urgent and Primary Care Centres provide access to same-day, urgent, non-emergency health care and are often open evenings, weekends and statutory holidays (actual hours vary by clinic). UPCCs are an alternative to visiting the hospital for issues that don’t require emergency care.
  • The First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day and First Nations Virtual Substance Use and Psychiatry Service can provide Indigenous people with access to virtual primary care physicians, psychiatrists, addictions specialists, and other providers specialized in culturally safe care.

While you are waiting to be connected to a primary care provider, it is important to make sure your Health Connect Registry registration remains accurate and current. This will help us to match you with a provider.

From time to time, Health Connect Registry registrants will receive emails from healthconnectregistrydonotreply@hlth.gov.bc.ca. These emails help us make sure your registration information is up to date and share information about health services available in your community.

Please call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 if you have any questions about how we are contacting you or if you have phishing concerns on these emails.
