British Columbia Specific Information
Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is now also being called polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS, but you may see both names used. PMOS/PCOS is a complex hormonal, metabolic and reproductive condition.
The word “polycystic” can be misleading. In PMOS/PCOS, ultrasound may show a higher number of small ovarian follicles, sometimes called antral follicles. These are not the same as ovarian cysts, and ovarian cysts are not required for diagnosis.
Speak with your health care provider if you have symptoms such as irregular periods, acne, extra facial or body hair, thinning scalp hair, difficulty becoming pregnant, or concerns about blood sugar or metabolic health.
