Just like adults, babies are happier and healthier when they move around. Here are some tips for helping your baby enjoy being active between the ages of six and 12 months:

  • Place some toys just out of reach so your baby has to work to move toward them.
  • Hold and rock your baby.
  • Play physical games (“peek-a-boo“ and “Patty Cake”).
  • Encourage your baby to crawl, roll, and explore in safe spaces, either indoors or outdoors.
  • Choose safe toys that promote physical activity.

Childhood Obesity

In Canada, the percentage of children who are overweight or obese has more than doubled in the past 20 years. About a third of Canadian children are overweight, and about half of these children are considered obese.
