British Columbia Specific Information
Mosquitoes can spread many diseases, including zika virus. Zika virus can be found in South America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Mexico, South Asia, and the Western Pacific Islands. While most people recover without complications, zika virus has been linked to a significant increase in the number of newborns with microcephaly, and a number of countries have also reported an increase in the number of cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
Wearing insect repellent can help protect against mosquito bites and prevent disease. For information about insect repellents, see HealthLinkBC File #96 Insect Repellents and DEET. For more information about zika virus, see our Zika Virus health feature or visit World Health Organization – Zika virus infection.
