British Columbia Specific Information
Mosquitoes can spread many diseases, including dengue fever. In its most serious form, dengue fever can lead to dengue haemorrhagic fever (also known as severe dengue), which is a life-threatening condition. Dengue fever can be found in many regions of the world including Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Eastern Mediterranean, South and Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Wearing insect repellent can help protect against mosquito bites and prevent disease.
For information on insect repellents, see HealthLinkBC File #96 Insect Repellents and DEET. To learn more about dengue fever, visit Public Health Agency of Canada – Dengue Fever. For information to help keep you safe and healthy while travelling, see HealthLinkBC File #41a Health Advice for Travellers and HealthLinkBC File #41g The Pregnant Traveller.
