Fitness DVDs and Videos

You can buy a wide variety of fitness instruction DVDs and videos (or borrow them from your local library). The advantage of working with a DVD or video is that you can do a workout in your own home at a time that's convenient for you. You can also replay it as often as you like, so you can learn at your own pace. Most take you through all the steps of the activity and provide useful tips and advice.

DVDs and videos are available that focus on healthier heart and lungs, stronger muscles and bones, healthier joints, and specific types of workouts, like yoga or Pilates (an exercise method designed to improve flexibility and strength, and create balance in the body).

When you're deciding on a DVD or video, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is it an activity I enjoy? If you don't enjoy it, you won't do it! Choose something that's fun.
  • Is it for beginners or advanced people? Choose the one that fits your level of experience.
  • How long does a workout take? Useful fitness activities can take as little as 10 minutes, or as long as 45 minutes. Choose a DVD or video that can comfortably fit into your schedule and lifestyle.
  • What are the instructor's qualifications? Make sure the person teaching the activity is certified by a provincial/ state or national organization.
  • Do I need special equipment? Some activities require exercise accessories, like dumbbells, exercise bands, a mat or a step.
  • Is it highly rated? Check out consumer reviews online to make sure the DVD or video is worth your time and money.
