Many British Columbia schools have developed innovative ways to support the health of their students, staff and the community - from "walking school buses" to school community food gardens, from anti-bullying policies to healthy fundraising events.
Healthy Schools BC builds on the great work that is already going on within the school system to ensure that BC schools are even healthier places to learn, work and play.
Bringing Healthy Schools to your community
BC has a broad healthy schools strategy that includes such things as mandated daily physical activity, guidelines to support healthy eating while restricting the sale of unhealthy foods and beverages, Action Schools! BC. Policies are in place to keep school grounds tobacco free so students can enjoy the outdoors without exposure to second-hand smoke. Schools are encouraged to create safe and caring environments that contribute to students' sense of belonging and well being.
The Healthy Schools BC initiative aims to build on the great work that is already happening in BC schools by:
- Supporting regional planning meetings between health authorities, school districts and community partners
- DID YOU KNOW? Kids who feel safe at school learn better, are healthier and less likely to smoke, drink alcohol or use marijuana. Inviting BC youth to form a Healthy Living Youth Council, participate in student-led inquiry projects, and co-create a provincial student engagement strategy for healthy schools

- Providing learning sessions, tools and a stories map to support and showcase strong practice in BC

Remember! Encourage your child to get plenty of rest to ensure they are alert and ready to learn at school. To help them sleep well, have your child go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning.
