Community Involvement

The World Health Organization includes "community involvement" as an aspect of a healthy workplace. That's because a business both affects, and is impacted by, its community. A healthy workplace can support the social and physical well-being of its community, for example, by getting involved in community events, or by improving factors that affect workers and their families.

Organizations that think "outside their walls" and act locally can create value for shareholders and contribute to the health and sustainability of their community.

Communicate about a commitment to community involvement through a mission or policy statement. This could include:

  • Working with community, environmental or consumer groups, depending on your business
  • A gender equality policy
  • Protecting and supporting vulnerable groups
  • Ensure workers know about the policy and include it in new employee orientation
  • Provide free or affordable literacy training to workers and their families
  • Become an Age-Friendly Business
  • Ask employees what kind of community involvement would be important to them and act in that direction
  • Allow employees time off to volunteer in the community and celebrate those who give back
  • Provide leadership and share your expertise with other workplaces
  • Hold a book collection drive for a local school library
