Hyperbaric physicians are medical doctors who specialize in hyperbaric medicine. They use hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to treat conditions such as decompression illness and carbon monoxide poisoning.
The word hyperbaric means making or using a higher pressure—of oxygen, for example—than is normally found in the air around us.
Hyperbaric medicine is not currently recognized as an official specialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. But hyperbaric physicians in Canada may be certified through other organizations, such as the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine.
