Complementary medicine is treatment and medicine that you use in addition to your doctor's standard care. (The word "complementary" means "in addition to.") It includes mind and body practices like acupuncture, natural health products like dietary supplements, and alternative health approaches like traditional Chinese medicine and homeopathy.

When complementary medicine is used along with standard, mainstream medicine, it is called integrative health care or integrative medicine.
