Health care aides are health professionals who work under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or doctor. Health care aides, who are also sometimes referred to as resident care aides, nursing assistants, nurse's aides, or hospital assistants, assist in the care of hospital, clinic, or nursing home patients.

Certification of health care aides varies by province. Certified care aides must complete a certified training program, followed by a written exam. Certification programs are available at community colleges and through some vocational training facilities.
