About Dietitian Services at HealthLinkBC
Dietitian Services at HealthLink BC specializes in easy-to-use nutrition
information and counselling based on the most current scientific sources.
As part of HealthLink BC, Dietitian Services provides supportive self-care
and navigation services to British Columbians and healthcare professionals.
Registered dietitians can provide brief nutrition consultation by phone.
If callers need more in-depth or continuing nutrition care, they are guided
to hospital outpatient dietitians, community nutritionists or other nutrition
services within the community.
Nutrition information provided by Dietitian Services at HealthLink BC
is up-to-date and evidence-based. Dietitian Services at HLBC has partnered
with Dietitians of Canada in developing and maintaining a customized version
of their PEN knowledgebase – “Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition”
– specially designed for a nutrition call centre. The registered
dietitians at Dietitian Services use this web-based resource, called ‘CPEN’,
to answer callers’ questions.
HLBC Dietitian Service’s general call centre dietitians answer
most of the nutrition questions received at the service. More complex
allergy and cancer nutrition questions are referred to the Allergy dietitian
and the Oncology dietitian, respectively. The Healthy Food Supply dietitian
supports the food industry in understanding and implementing BC’s
new trans fat regulations.
Dietitian Services at HealthLink BC’s website serves the BC public
and health professionals by providing evidence-based consumer handouts
to help consumers start out and stay healthy (nutrition and food safety
prevention information), and to help them to manage their own health conditions.
The website also provides links to other reputable websites with useful
nutrition and health information.
Dietitian Services at HealthLink BC started out as ‘Dial-A-Dietitian’
in 1972, with a single phone line in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland calling
area, and became province-wide in 1991. It has a long tradition of serving
the public and other health care professionals with accurate and timely
nutrition information and counselling. Dietitian Services at HealthLink
BC improves access to evidence-based nutrition information and counselling
for people living in remote areas of the province and allows all clients
to seek information at the time that best meets their needs. Translation
services are available in 130 languages.
